.. and what we can learn from this Magazine Moguls crazy career

Welcome

Whats up! Welcome to Wouters blog. It’s Friday! That means i’m going to be covering a breakdown of someone amazing in the industry. Today we’re covering:

Jane Pratt Magazine Mogul's career and 5 things to know before you start a media brand!

Who is Jane Pratt? She founded Sassy in 1988, a magazine that took the women’s media niche by storm with its candid approach and simple language. Oh and btw she was also the founding editor of Jane magazine in 1997, ya. She is a bad ass.

Now although you’re not trying to create a Magazine empire, there are some really interesting go to market/media brand learnings from her story. So today i’ll break down the 5 things you can action on after reading this newsletter.

Her Story in Short
What did she do and why did it work?

Both magazines Jane started talked about things that were considered taboo, like sex and feminism.

This resonated with women and became very popular fast, it also paved the way for current magazines like Cosmopolitan

Her influence can be seen in the shift towards more authentic and diverse representation in women's media, as well as the integration of feminist thought into mainstream entertainment coverage. I think this is also true in general for media. We’re now looking more to niche b2b creators and content creators for our trusted information.

We follow folks on Linkedin and Twitter — we don’t follow companies or brands.

This trend she helped pioneer is evident even today in the digital media landscap. Funnily enough she has been involved in an online website aimed at women called xoJane, meant for women who grew up reading the Jane magazine.

“At a time before blogs, Twitter and Facebook, Jane Pratt was honing skills that are now keys in social media: transparency and authenticity. As the founding editor of Sassy in 1988, she brought risque topics to the forefront (often with a dose of distinctive sexual candor)”
